Follow the Trend and Pay the Cost

Every week the internet hands us a new script, and every week we obey it without asking who wrote it or else what it costs. Wear this, dance like this, shape your body like this, chase this life. Our celebrities set the pace, the algorithm pushes it to our faces, and somewhere between envy and fear of being left behind, we press follow. Some of these trends give back, some take everything, and most of us never stop long enough to tell the difference.

On the bright side, trends can be harmless fun or else even a blessing. The '2026 is the new 2016' wave had people dusting off old filters and throwback songs, and nobody got hurt. Don Jazzy and Shallipopi earned real praise for cash giveaways in the middle of a harsh economy, and Asherkine's fans insist his support for education and small businesses has made a real difference. But the same culture that celebrates generosity also sells impossible bodies and reckless dares, and that is where the laughter dies. Lagos influencer Elena Jessica, known to fans as Leenah Doll, reportedly died on March 8, 2026 after a second, revision BBL in Ikoyi, with her family saying severe pain, fever and swelling set in just two days after the February procedure. Her death pushed the Lagos State Government into an investigation and got 'Say No to BBL' trending, the same timelines that once hyped 'baddie upgrades.' Abroad, looksmaxxing star Clavicular was hospitalised in April after a suspected overdose, and still went on to explain his philosophy on national TV in July as the regimen kept spreading among young men. Worse still, nine year old JackLynn Blackwell died in March after attempting the blackout challenge. When a trend works, the celebrity gets paid. When it kills, the family pays.

So the question is simple. Before you follow the next big thing, ask who profits if you do it and who buries you if it goes wrong. A trend that costs you a silly video or else an old photo is fair game. A trend that asks for your body, your savings or else your child's safety deserves a hard no, no matter how many celebrities are doing it. Elena followed the script to the very end. The rest of us still have time to put the phone down.
