Pursuit of Jade was my very first attempt at watching a Chinese drama. I&rsquove always been more of a K-drama person, so the idea of sitting through 40 episodes felt like a lot compared to the usual 16-20 episodes I'm used to. It honestly seemed like too big a commitment.

But after seeing so many reviews online, I decided to give it a try and I&rsquom so glad I did.

Within the first 15 minutes, I was completely hooked. What I thought I would watch slowly over time turned into a full-on binge. I ended up finishing all 40 episodes in just two days. Yes, two days.

The story follows Fan Chang Yu, a butcher's daughter who is forced to grow up quickly after losing her parents. She takes over her household and does whatever it takes to survive. Along the way, she rescues an injured man, Xie Zheng, who is actually a fallen noble hiding his true identity while seeking revenge.

To save her home from debt collectors, Fan Chang Yu enters into a fake marriage with him. What starts off as an arrangement slowly turns into something real and that's where the magic begins.

One of the things I loved most about this drama is Fan Chang Yu's journey. Watching her grow from a simple Pig butcher's daughter into a powerful, first-rank female general is incredibly satisfying. She's fearless, determined, and doesn't wait around to be saved. She picks up her butcher's knife and heads into battle, and honestly, she owns every moment.

Tian Xiwei was absolutely perfect for this role. It felt like the character was written just for her. She brought so much life, strength, and emotion to Fan Chang Yu that you can't help but root for her.

Then there's Zhang Linghe as Xie Zheng, the Marquis of Wu'an. He plays his role well, but I have to admit that next to Fan Chang Yu, his 'mighty marquis' energy sometimes takes a back seat. And somehow, that actually makes their dynamic even better.

The chemistry between them is on another level. It's not rushed, it builds slowly, but when it hits, it really hits. It's intense, emotional, and very believable. Their fake marriage feels so real that you almost forget it started as a deal.

What makes their relationship even more interesting is how different their journeys are. For Xie Zheng, it's about revenge and reclaiming his identity. For Fan Chang Yu, it's about discovering who she truly is and how strong she can be. Somewhere along the way, their paths intertwine, and love grows naturally between them.

By the end, I found myself really attached to the characters, especially Fan Chang Yu and the Marquis of Wu'an. Their story stays with you even after the drama ends.

Overall, Pursuit of Jade completely changed my mind about Chinese dramas. It didn't feel long or else else dragged out. In fact, I wasn't ready for it to end.

If you've ever felt hesitant about starting a 40-episode series, this might just be the one that changes your mind too.
